Disadvantages of Aluminium Kitchen Cabinets: An Honest Guide

Aluminium kitchen cabinets are not perfect for everyone. Here are the real trade-offs, how to reduce each one, and who should choose another material.

By the Design Profession team · Updated 17 October 2026

Quick answer: The main disadvantages of aluminium kitchen cabinets are a higher upfront cost than MDF or plywood, a narrower choice of real-wood looks, and quality that varies between fabricators. Dents and noisy doors are also possible with poor construction or hardware. Most of these drawbacks can be reduced by choosing honeycomb-reinforced, welded cabinets with good hardware.

We build aluminium cabinets for a living, so we want you to choose with open eyes. Here are the real downsides and what to do about each.

1. Higher Upfront Cost

Aluminium starts from about S$280 per foot run, compared with roughly S$100 to S$160 for MDF or plywood. If budget is the only priority, wood-based cabinets are cheaper on day one. See the full aluminium kitchen cabinet price guide. The counter-argument is lifetime cost: aluminium resists the moisture damage that often forces wood cabinets to be repaired or replaced.

2. Fewer Real-Wood Looks

Aluminium cabinets come in wood-grain, matte and solid-colour finishes, but they are not real timber. If you want solid-wood grain, texture and the ability to refinish, aluminium is not the same experience.

3. Thin or Hollow Panels Can Dent

Cheap hollow aluminium panels can dent or flex under a hard knock or heavy load. Honeycomb-reinforced panels are much stiffer for the same weight. Ask whether the cabinet uses a honeycomb core and how the corners are joined. Our honeycomb aluminium cabinet guide explains what to look for.

4. Quality Varies Between Fabricators

Panel construction, welding, finishes and hardware differ a lot between suppliers, and two quotes can describe very different products. Ask for panel construction, hardware brand and warranty terms in writing, and look at real finished projects rather than renders.

5. Doors Can Sound Tinny With Poor Hardware

Metal doors can sound hollow if they close hard. Good soft-close hinges and dampers solve this, so do not cut costs on hardware.

6. Harder to Modify on Site

Aluminium cabinets are precision-fabricated off-site to your measurements. That gives a clean, fast installation, but it also means the layout should be planned carefully before fabrication, because big changes afterwards are harder than with on-site carpentry.

Frequently Asked Questions

The higher upfront cost compared with MDF or plywood. Aluminium usually costs more per foot run, though it avoids many of the moisture and termite repairs that wood cabinets face.

Hollow aluminium panels can dent under a hard impact. Honeycomb-reinforced panels with welded joints are much stiffer and more resistant.

Not with good hardware. Soft-close hinges and dampers prevent the hollow, tinny sound that cheap cabinets can make when doors close.

Yes. Wood-grain finishes give a warm timber look, although the material underneath is aluminium rather than real wood.

It may not suit a very tight budget, a short-term home, or a design that depends on real solid-wood texture.
